Minutes – April, 2025

Scandinavian Home Society Board of Directors

Wednesday April 16, 2025, 4:00 pm

West Thunder Community Centre

Present: Peter Knudsen, Darrell Matson, Kathy Smith, David Heroux

The meeting was called to order by Ken.

The agenda was approved as written.

No declaration of conflict.

The minutes from March 16, 2025, were approved with the change to reflect the AGM would be held at the West Thunder Community Centre.

Business Arising:

  1. Recruitment – members who had agreed to contact potential recruits are still working on this.
  2. Bursary – Kathy made the motion that the committee of the whole should look at the feasibility of establishing a bursary. David seconded the motion.  Carried.

A discussion followed.  David made the motion that the Scandinavian Home Society provide a bursary to Confederation College in the amount of $2000 to be awarded to 2 students, each to receive $1000. The individuals should be from northern Ontario and have a connection to Nordic heritage. 

This was seconded by Peter.  Carried. 

President’s Report:

Ken reported that -the Valhalla is booked for Midsummers.  Julefest is booked for December 6 at the Valhalla and Danny Johnson isbo oked for the music.

Ken has received some pictures from Elinor Barr, and these will be added to the memorabilia stored at Peters.  It was agreed to take Memorabilia out of the parking lot and add it to new business for the next meeting which will be held at Peters.

Treasurer’s Report:

David reported that as of April 16, 2025, the chequing account is $8,891.81 and investments $248,879.04. Disbursements are $379.68 and deposits are $130.00.  It was moved by David, seconded by Peter, to approve the report. Carried.

Membership:

Darrell reported that to date we have 10 individual memberships renewed and 11 families.

Strategic Planning/Governance:

Darrell reported that this is ongoing.

Social:

Peter reported:

Midsummers planning is well on its way. Tickets for the brunch will be $25.  He suggested that we offer members bring a friend (Member plus friend) with the friend/guest charged $12.50 and receive a complimentary membership for the remainder of 2025. This was approved by all present. Darrell will send out a flyer.

Julefest planning is in progress.  Peter noted we will encourage attendees to stay overnight at the Valhalla.

Planning for the pancake breakfast at the AGM and the Lutefisk dinner is in progress.

New Business:

Our next meeting will be at Peters on May 21 at 4:00pm at which time we will look at memorabilia storage.
